Venerable Bede was a major figure during a time known as the Northumbrian renaissance(a historical occurrence which was rather like a small version of a renaissance), which was a byproduct of the interaction between the Irish and the Benedictine monks in Northumbria. But who was this Venerable Bede? Why was he significant?
Venerable Bede was an English Benedictine monk at a monastery in Jarrow, he had grown up as a monk. He wrote many works of poetry and prose and was a scholar. He even wrote the famous Ecclesiastical History of the English People, which is considered a very good historical piece by historians today. In this historical piece Venerable Bede avoided bias and included both sides of the story, which is a very important and good thing that historians should do, also this work was so important in the middle ages that it was copied many times. A thing that he wished, was to pinpoint the exact date of Easter, because at the time there was a little bit of a debate between the Irish and Benedictine monks on the dating of Easter. During the process of this Bede actually ended up creating the dating system we still use today, BC and AD. He also was a teacher.
The reason why he was so significant was due to his writing, especially his famous piece Ecclesiastical History of the English People, which I mentioned above. He is also well known and significant for being a teacher, one of his student’s even taught the famous Alcuin, who became an important scholar. But most importantly he created the dating system that we use today.
In summary, Venerable Bede was an English Benedictine Monk, who is known for his written works, and dating system. His written works, especially the Ecclesiastical History of the English People, have been copied down for centuries, and he was an influence in the spread of Christianity in England.
